Illinois' share of multistate VW settlement nearly $29M
Illinois' share of a multistate settlement with Volkswagen will amount to about $29 million for violations of state law related to the German carmaker's cheating on emissions tests.
In addition, Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office announced Tuesday that a separate settlement of consumer lawsuits could steer at least $150 million toward tens of thousands of affected VW customers in Illinois. Illinois can also apply for $97 million from an environmental settlement reached by the U.S. Justice Department and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Nationwide, Volkswagen will spend up to $15.3 billion to settle consumer lawsuits and various government complaints involving 2-liter diesels. That includes about $603 million in a settlement with 44 states, including Illinois.
Madigan's office says the scandal affected nearly 30,000 cars sold in Illinois.
