Lisa Madigan reports collecting nearly $1 billion in revenue

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office says it collected nearly $1 billion in revenue last year.

The money is collected through settlements, fines and penalties. The sum includes Illinois' $22.5 million share of Morgan Stanley's $3.2 billion national settlement announced last month over bank practices that contributed to the 2008 financial crisis.

The total also includes $265 million in tobacco litigation and $320 million collected through cases involving damage to state property, child support enforcement, fines and penalties.

Madigan's office says about $400 million has gone toward the state's pension systems.

The overall 2015 amount is down from the year before when it was a record $1.3 billion. Madigan's office says the number fluctuates slightly from year to year depending on settlements, but is on average $1 billion annually.
