Chicago gas station owner imprisoned in $1 million tax fraud case

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan (D) and the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) announced July 11 that a Chicago-area gas station owner pled guilty and was sentenced to prison for defrauding the state of nearly $1 million in gasoline sales taxes. It is one of the largest cases of gas sales tax fraud in the state’s ongoing criminal enforcement operation.

Madigan said wireless cramming is poised to become a major source of consumer fraud, much like it did on landline phones before the practice was banned in Illinois. A recent study points to the extent of the problem, showing that 60 percent of third-party charges placed on mobile phone bills of Vermont residents were “crammed” during a two-month period in 2012, according to a survey conducted by the University of Vermont and the Vermont Attorney General’s Office.

Seward chemical plant to remain closed until cause of explosion determined

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan (D) and Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joseph Bruscato (D) announced June 13 a court order will keep a Winnebago County chemical manufacturing company damaged by an explosive fire closed until the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) determines it is safe to re-start operations at the Seward, Ill., plant.

Mortgage settlement brings relief to 25K in Illinois

Since March  1, 2012, the settlement has enabled 3,513 Illinois homeowners to receive permanent mortgage modifications with principal writedowns that reduced their indebtedness by an average of $118,235. Another 8,439 consumers had second liens on their homes  extinguished. Almost 6,000 consumers completed short sales, selling their homes, with their lender's permission, for less than the amount owed. Additional homeowners received other forms of assistance.
