11 states want feds to discharge Corinthian students' federal debt

Yesterday, presumably in response to the DoE's stated intention of establishing a “clearer, more comprehensive” debt forgiveness program for defrauded students, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan released a statement saying that she, “along with the Attorneys General of 10 other states, called on the U.S. Department of Education to cancel federal student loans in cases where schools have broken state laws, and to provide clear processes for students seeking relief.”

Lisa Madigan warns of home-repair scams following tornadoes

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is warning residents affected by last week’s severe weather to watch for home repair scams.  Tornadoes moved through Delavan in Tazewell County and south of Galesburg through Cameron.  Madigan says these home repair con-artists will move into recently-damaged areas and pressure residents to make impulsive decisions about cleanup.  She says residents should call her office’s consumer fraud hotline or law enforcement to report suspicious behavior.

Our View: Measure would fight abuse, neglect and theft in Illinois nursing homes

Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office said Illinois has more than 860 nursing homes with more than 76,000 residents. Those numbers likely will increase as the state’s population ages. As a result, the about 5,000 complaints a year of abuse, neglect or theft of property by nursing home staff also is likely to increase. The Illinois Department of Public Health found 106 allegations to be valid in 2013.

Madigan sues Woodford County appliance repair business

“Just because a company advertises that it has the appropriate certifications to do repair work does not make it true,” Madigan said. “You have to do your own research before contracting for home repair services. At the very least, check to see if the company is in good standing with my office’s Consumer Fraud Bureau and the Better Business Bureau.”
